connections....

ritesh lead me to the thought of connections (bringing the beach to piedmont part) and recently i came across something i am sure y'all have already seen on core77. mark ovenden's book, transit maps of the world has a london underground feel to it, mapping out the entire world on one simple transit system. if it is this easy to think of connecting the world, or connecting a community (beach), why hasn't something this drastic occured? are our current "escapes" places like ice rinks? the botanical garden? high museum? maybe it has and i dont know / utilize its potential (internet, email, blogging, mass information sharing, and lets not forget the telephone and written LETTERS!)

my rhetorical question...how do i bring experiences closer to me without sacrificing too much quality/detail AND without breaking the bank?? how do i fully appreciate the lourve even if i cannot visit it this weekend? how do i experience the beach without going? we have successfully brought too much information to our fingertips...now how do we synthesize it?

this is interesting.
although i think the purpose of the subway map was only to point out which cities have, or plan, a transit system. i don't think it was to propose a world-wild train system.

addressing shelton's question, i think the answer is more to embrace and create those attractions locally. americans are obsessed with the notion that you must travel far to find the most exclusive, most unique, most extravagant, most fun...
only to create the situation of coming home to a place that is more boring, more uninspiring, more the same.

haha, i was just think about something on the world's mass transit system as i was traveling on the MARTA and chicago's CTA. I love the MARTA system which allows me to use credit/debit card to credit my card but i don't like the card restrictions on it. Someone should/could travel the world, see what are the plus/minus points of each mass transit system and see why they work or don't work.

As for shelton's question, i think we've the technology to bring the information but for that kind of experience which i think you're thinking of, i think we're just starting to go down that path with 3D holographic displays. It all good to be able to see 2D pictures of a beach in Mexico or art in the Lourve but, short of flying there, maybe Virtual Reality or 3-D holographic projected spaces maybe the answer. Some technologies i found awhile ago on this were

The cheoptics360 one particularly struck me and just google it for more information. I've to run now. sorry.
